NOTES FROM A PRIVILEGED LOCKDOWN (written March 13th)

No school, no work, no guests, no social life, no sport. The official Italian hashtag for the COVID19 emergency is: #iostoacasa: #imstayinghome.

Our family of 4 (Marco, 60 in a few days; Majla (me), 56 this summer; Eva, 22 on summer solstice and Giotto, who will be an adult next September) are going to retreat for the mandated 14 days to reset.

All routines are off. We have about 16 hours a day to fill, nowhere to go with them, and only each other to spend them with.

Let’s see how that goes!

Now she is teaching how to make it perfectly, for Accidental Tourists!

As the renovation continues, we continue to find STUFF.
Look at this: heavy as a watermelon.
Millenials, read no further: the following will make no sense to you.
But if you are at least half a century old like us, you will feel the urge to lift the receiver and call a childhood friend.
(Because OF COURSE you will know their number by heart, as we all did).
And the tick-e-tee sound of it will bring you back to when dialling was done on a DIAL.
Come and stay in our mountain village retreat and make all the imaginary calls your heart desires, with a heavy receiver in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other (complimentary and headache-free).
We'll be sure to place a comfortable chair right by it.

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE old STUFF? I sure do. Especia

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE old STUFF?
I sure do. Especially when it connects me with people BEYOND the stuff.
Last week I found an old, broken, formerly expandable dining table in our bottomless cantina. (If you've been here, you know it is BOTTOMLESS.)
The mechanism seemed too sophisticated to attempt a DIY, so I asked around for a local carpenter.
Turns out GIULIANO, the carpenter I remember from my childhood, at 83 still does some small restoration.
I take my son to help me unload the heavy piece, and ask the old man:
- "Do you suppose you could make something of this broken old table?".
He cracks up laughing, but with tears in his big blue eyes:
- "I suppose I can. I made this table for your grandmother!"
Now, my grandmother died in August 1968.
And Giuliano claims he would do ANYTHING to honour her memory.
His wife starts telling stories about my grandparents that humble me and make me proud at the same time.
And my son is taking it all in.
Thank you Grandma.
