NOTES FROM A PRIVILEGED LOCKDOWN – DAY 8

(Falling behind! Seriously starting to lose track of time. I feel like I am in an eternal Sunday: a sort of non-punishing version of the Groundhog Day). I wake up in a great reset mood, and look back at the Day-7 picture of that table I spent my low day at:– uninteresting papers everywhere,– my…

THE KITCHEN GOLDEN RULES:
(you already know them, don't you?)
  • 1) GO SEASONAL: strawberries in the winter? There is more flavour in missing them, than in eating them. There is always the right moment for each pleasure.
  • 2) GO LOCAL: for fresh produce, try something that wouldn't require a VISA if it were a person.
  • 3) INVEST IN QUALITY: have the best olive oil you can get your hands on. We promise it will make anything edible and healthy
  • 4) TAKE TIME: vacation begins when the journey starts, not when you get to destination...Make preparation enjoyable all the way.
  • 5) BE TOLERANT: when following a recipe: cooking is not an exact science! Organic eggs are not all the same size, hot dry weather can make your pasta dough extra-thirsty, arugola or peppers can be mild to super-spicy, etc
  • 6) MATCH WELL: most food will taste its best if paired appropriately. Being a good Food Matchmaker can actually save you tons of time in the kitchen and bring out the best in each ingredient. That goes for foods and wines, of course, just like for clothes. And people.
  • 7) SHARE THE REWARDS!. Only the first-time utmost masterpieces and the horrible kitchen disasters may gain from being eaten alone. Everything else is worth eating in company.
  • 8) SET A BEAUTIFUL TABLE. You know the story about wearing your pretty underwear everyday? Same: use your best tableware. It will enhance good work and muffle the blunders.

Kim and David: a couple who hasn’t even been to the Accidental Tourist yet!
How did that happen?
Please read til the end: this story will amaze you as it did us!

Kim and David live in Prosperity, S.C on a farm and are very busy with everyday life:
he runs a successful business, she hold the fort AND homeschools her youngest children.
With all that, they don’t have time to travel, but Kim enjoys travellers’s posts on IG and FB.
She follows @kelsewhatelse, a superb blogger who shares high quality “Practical Mom Tips ” from Kansas City.
Kim sees Kelsey’s post about their family travel to Italy and stay at the Accidental Tourist; that leads her to our listing of CASA ALTA*: one of our homes for rent/sale in Ormea.
And by sheer impromptu inspiration, she calls David up at work and tells him “let’s buy this house in Italy”.

So Kim and David put together Inspiration with Foundation: got passports, sent a deposit on the house, and bought tickets to come to Ormea this Spring and meet their new Italian home.

I mean, if this isn’t the ULTIMATE Accidental Tourist, I don’t know what is.

So here is to Kim and David , for “throwing their hearts beyond the obstacle” - as we say in Italy. We will be toasting together in person on the rooftop terrace, in a few weeks!

Good news for you off-the-beated-track travellers out there:
Kim and David plan to keep CASA ALTA available for short term rent.
Come and stay in the house that inspired them!
